Veterinary Surgical Nurse

This position allowed me to utilize and expand my nursing skills to their fullest potential.  As a Nurse at this
practice, I worked on a team with three other Nurses and one Surgeon.  Each Nurse was responsible for their
own patients and followed the patient from initial interview and check in with their owner through surgery/postop
and finally, to the discharge appointment and all their follow up visits.  I performed all aspects of surgical patient
care including; preoperative patient assessment, choice of anesthetic agents, induction and intubation, patient
monitoring during anesthesia, i.e., EKG, blood pressure monitoring, fluid monitoring, respiratory
monitoring and pulse oximetry.  My responsibilities also included short and long-term post operative nursing
care, care of non-ambulatory animals, bandage changes, IVC & arterial catheter placement and management,
parenteral nutritional support, pain management, physical therapy, client education and post-operative home
care instructions. Cases were varied and ranged from elective Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy on young
healthy patients to delicate spinal surgery and thoracotomy procedures on critical/moribund patients.  Our
practice utilized state of the art equipment that included Eklin Digital Radiography, CO2 Laser Surgery,
Arthroscope/Laparoscope equipment and Surgivet Monitors.  All the surgeons are board certified and most of
the Nurses are either Certified or Registered Technicians.
